The glacial blue-green waters of the Wachusett Inlet have been called many things since its first recorded history. It was first named for the U.S.S. Wachusett which entered Glacier Bay in 1881. It has only grown in size since 1907 as Plateau and Muir Glaciers continue to recede, giving the water its color. The Glacier Bay Expedition of 1941 called it "Wisconsin Inlet" because members were connected with the University of Wisconsin. In 1942, it was named Cushing Inlet for Cushing Glacier by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Now, the current Western Mining History Site calls it Wachusett once more in the listing of a defunct copper, molybdenum, and silver mine discovered in 1966.
