Eclipses now symbolize new chapters with beginnings, endings, and clean slates. But that wasn't always the case. The Norse believed siblings Sol, goddess of the sun, and Mani, god of the moon, travel across the sky in their horse-drawn chariots chased by two wolves, Skoll and Hati. Once caught, it soon meant the end of the world. Ancient Chinese, Korean, Hindu, and Egyptian cultures thought the sun was being devoured by a dragon or other such being but returned after the being was chased away or fought off. In German mythology, the hot female Sun energetically ruled the day and cold male Moon sleepily ruled the night. Seeking companionship, they came together and were married. My favorite comes from Ancient Persians who thought an eclipse was a prank performed by a peri, a winged, fairy-like spirit.
